"I want to explore the limits of my body. How far can I go in six months? A full marathon is a big challenge, but I will put 200% effort in this. I am sure that with the support of Energy Lab and the motivation of my fellow Sofico Ambassadors, this will be an amazing experience!"

Running through my training experiences

Cracking the Code of Interval Training

Interval training is not a walk in the park. It's a constant struggle to hit that sweet spot in the heart rate zone. The interval trainings consist of a warming up, a combination of high and low heart rate zones and a cool down. It was especially difficult to hit the higher heart rate zones. One of the trainings my legs didn’t want to go faster, so I did not hit the highest heart rate zone in time. During the low heart rate zone of the interval I often walked while doing breathing exercises to drop my heart rate as fast as possible.

Polar H-10: Not Just a Gadget, a Sidekick

To even better track my heart rate zones than my Garmin Vivoactive 4 sport watch, I gave myself an early Christmas present: the polar H10. This heart rate sensor isn't just another piece of tech. It's become a reliable sidekick, giving me real-time feedback and making sure I'm not slacking off during those high-intensity sprints.

Rainy Days and Treadmill Grind

Living in a place where the weather can be downright miserable means I've had my fair share of treadmill sessions. It's not the same as running outside, but it gets the job done when Mother Nature isn't playing nice. In a 10 minute distance walk I have my home gym, where I can go running whenever I want!

Buddy Up: Training with the Crew

Although I like running alone, training with friends can inject a dose of extra fun into the grind. There's something about collective suffering that makes the kilometers more bearable, and the banter helps distract from the burning muscles. I often go power training with my friend Sam. Last week we did an indoor interval training together. He was riding on a bike, I was running… we only need another member to swim and we can go participate in a triathlon as a team!

Mixing It Up: Power Training Edition

It's not all about running. Shoutout to my personal trainer from Hogent for supporting me in core and power training. If you do any kind of exercise, it is important to do it right. Right weight, right form, right movement. My personal trainer is a sport science student, so he is the perfect fit to give me advice during my trainings.

From Milestones to Progress: It's Happening

The numbers don't lie. The distances that used to be intimidating are now just another part of the routine. The mix of interval training, the right gadgets, treadmill miles, social runs, and hitting the weights is paying off, one step at a time. Still four months to go to give everything I have. My (ambitious) goal is to run the marathon in 3 hours and 30 minutes. If I keep training like this, I think I can do it! LET’S GO

Let's get started

My Marathon Journey: Week One.

As I embark on the thrilling adventure of preparing for my first marathon, the initial week has proven to be a kick-start to a new chapter in my pursuit of endurance and self-discovery. Armed with a comprehensive approach to training and personalized insights from Energy Lab and Runners Lab, I am ready to take on this challenge.

Training in Threes: A Triumphant Start.

On Thursday the 12th of October, there was a kick-off day at Energy Lab. Through a DEXA scan I got an analysis of my bone density and body composition. Next there was a physical test: running in time frames of five minutes, and each loop the speed on the treadmill increased, until failure. Based on all this knowledge, a highly personalized training plan crafted by the experts at Energy Lab was made for me. Three times a week, I hit the pavement. The structured routine not only challenged my physical limit, but also instilled a sense of discipline, making each run a steppingstone toward my marathon goal.

The right fit: a foot analysis at Runners Lab.

Someone once said: the right shoes can make or break a marathon. Since I did not have any decent running shoes, this came as the perfect opportunity. The experts from Runners Lab examined my running pattern and foot structure and recommended the perfect pair to get me through the miles ahead: Brooks Ghost.

Looking Ahead: A Marathon Journey Unfolds.

As the echoes of my first week of marathon preparation resonate, I am filled with a sense of purpose and excitement. ‘The Best Us’ is an initiative at Sofico to become the best version of yourself. The Ambassador program is a part of that vision. I am truly grateful for this opportunity to represent, together with my fellow Ambassadors, Sofico at the Sofico Ghent Marathon. We will motivate and support each other, train together, and for sure become The Best Us!
